An extractive pit of post medievalmodern date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on the north side of Aston Hill, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 88821 10816. The pit measures approximately 167x122m at its largest and is on the south side of the road; it is located approximately 350m south of another extractive pit (see MBCNEW) and further chalk pits are visible approximately 280m to the south west along the ridge (MBCNEW), as well as all throughout the woodland on the Chilterns scarp within the project area. The underlying solid geology is Holywell Nodular Chalk, mainly used for clunch, lime and flint. The SSSI covers the area of the former pit, dug for ragstone, which is covered by grassland with an unusually rich assemblage of herbs, shrubs and invertebrates, including several which are rare in the county.(2-4)
