Description
'PIT' SHOWN ON 6IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 34, SURVEYED 1880); 'CHALK PIT' SHOWN ON 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 34.7, SURVEYED 1880); 6IN OS (SURVEYED 1930) [B1]
A chalk pit of post medieval/modern date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was/were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located north of Ballad’s Wood, approximately 400m south of Aston Hill Farm, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89355 09663. Chalk pit is shown on Epoch 1 Ordnance Survey map and is approximately 45x25m at its largest. Underlying geology is Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation, usually used for flint and lime, no Superficial Deposits are recorded. Modern land use is grassland and the pit is grassed over but still visible as a dip in the ground surface; the site of the pit is on a field boundary close to some earthworks which appear to be part of a cycle track which was in the woodland (closed for Ash dieback in 2023).
