Description

'SAND PIT' SHOWN ON 6IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 33, SURVEYED 1880); 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 33.2, SURVEYED 1880) [B1]

Three post medieval sand pits are visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields SW of Stonethorpe Farm and centred at SP 78315 12117, two of the three sand pits are recorded on the 1st Edition OS map dated to the 1880s. The largest pit is rectilinear with an area of about 2763 square metres, with the remaining two irregularly shaped with an area of 1,408 and 723 square metres. The earthworks remain visible in 1978, but by 1994 the two irregularly shaped pits appear to have been infilled and levelled. On recent remote sensing data, the remaining pit is visible as a low earthwork under woodland cover (2-5).
