Description

'SAND PIT' SHOWN ON 6IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 23, SURVEYED 1879); 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 23.10, SURVEYED 1880); 6IN OS (SURVEYED 1930) (B1).

A post medieval gravel pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located about 190 metres NW of Barrettstown Estates and centred at SP 79098 21041, abutting Pitchcott Road/Oving Road, an irregularly shaped depression covers an area of about 5,780 square metres. The gravel pit appears on the 1st Edition OS map dated to the early 1880s. On recent remote sensing data, the earthwork remain extant (2-4).
