Description

An extractive pit of post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 270m south of Thornton, and centred at SP 75269 35491. Modern land use is equestrian with a manege created at the northern end. A map of 1904 records this as a brickworks, constructed in 1850 to produce bricks for the rebuilding of Thornton Hall (now Thornton College). The land was levelled when Brickfield House was renovated as a dwelling in the 1990s; photographs of this are on the website.
