Description
'PIT' SHOWN ON 6IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 13, SURVEYED 1880); 'CLAY PIT AND LIME KILN' SHOWN ON 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 13.8, SURVEYED 1880); 'PIT' SHOWN ON 6IN OS (SURVEYED 1930); 1:10,000 OS (SURVEYED 1977) (B1).
A large extractive pit of post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 300m east of Thornborough Mill, Thornborough, and centred at SP 73755 35324. Pit is triangular in shape, 220x86m in size, cut in to ridge and furrow earthworks and in to White Limestone solid geology. (2-3)
