Description
'GRAVEL PIT' SHOWN ON 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 18.8, SURVEYED 1879) [B1]
A post-medieval gravel pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 250 metres NW of the railway bridge over Claydon Brook and centred at SP 72289 28771, an irregularly shaped gravel pit is about 1,312 square metres in area and appears to cut into a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. The gravel extraction features on the 1880 dated 1st Edition OS map as an ‘old gravel pit’ at that time. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, the extractive pit is still visible (2-5).
