Description
'SAND PIT' SHOWN ON 6IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 18, SURVEYED 1880); 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 18.16, SURVEYED 1880); 6IN OS (SURVEYED 1930) [B1]
A post-medieval sand pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field immediately S of Sandhill Farm and centred at SP 73191 26441, an irregularly-shaped extractive pit is about 16,454 square metres in area and cuts through a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. The extraction site features on the 1880 dated 1st Edition OS map as an ‘Old Sand Pit’ and therefore likely dates to the first half of the 19th century or earlier. On recent remote sensing data the extractive pit is still just visible but is much more shallow and its edges greatly softened by plough-levelling (2-4).
