Description

'CLAY PIT' SHOWN ON 6IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 8, SURVEYED 1880); 'CLAY PIT AND BRICKFIELD' SHOWN ON 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 8.11, SURVEYED 1880); 'PIT DISUSED' SHOWN ON 6IN OS (SURVEYED 1930); 1:10,000 OS (SURVEYED 1971) [B1]

Three extractive pits of post medieval/modern date are visible on historic aerial photographs and sensing data as earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on the south side of Lovell Wood, Lillingstone Lovell, and centred at SP 70275 41683. Largest pit is recorded on Epoch 1 map with a brick works, two smaller pits to the south are not but are visible as earthworks in the 1940s; modern land use is for paddocks. Underlying solid geology is Blisworth Clay Formation overlain by Superficial deposits of Diamicton. (2-5)
