Description

Excellent historical documentation; a C16 map shows village cluster here; depopulation reported in 1517, allegedly of 1504. In 1608 there were 10 tenants (B4).
Earthworks visible on APs - see comments (B6-7).

A medieval deserted settlement is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields W and E of the road and centred at SP 72840 21144 and 73100 20742, the extensive settlement remains to the W of the road extend over 735 metres WNW-ESE and comprise a linear hollow way that leads to a sprawling complex of interconnected ditches or trackways, forming an irregular and ill-defined settlement pattern, sometimes enclosing an earthwork platform of various sizes and shape. To the E of the lane, the earthworks extend about 640 metres NNE-SSW abutting the course of the former railway line. These comprise a more coherent pattern, being a number of boundary ditches parallel and perpendicular to the railway line, along with scarps forming areas of terraced ground. To the S of this area are a number of probable fishponds (8-14 ).
