'GRAVEL PIT' SHOWN ON 6IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 13, SURVEYED 1880); 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 13.8, SURVEYED 1880) [B1]

An extractive pit of post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on the south side of the A422 approximately 450m north of Leckhampstead Wharf, Leckhampstead, and centred at SP 73603 36286. Pit is 34x24m, with the longest side to the road and is cut in to solid geology of Great Oolite Group Limestone, overlain by Superficial Deposits of Glaciofluvial Sands and gravels. This pit is cut in to a length of trackway between Leckhampstead Wharf and the site of Grove Barn, shown on Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map but by 1946 this has been demolished. (2-3)
