Description

'GRAVEL PIT' SHOWN ON 6IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 19, SURVEYED 1880); 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 19.1, SURVEYED 1880); 6IN OS (SURVEYED 1930) [B1]

An extractive pit of post medieval/modern date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 270m west of Adstock Fields Farm, Adstock, and centred at SP 74827 30577. Long narrow pit visible as earthwork at the centre of a field, cut through ridge and furrow earthworks. Pit measures approximately 145x32m at its largest and is cut in to underlying solid geology of Stewartby Mudstone; no superficial deposits are recorded. This is possibly a marl pit based on its location at the centre of the field. (2-3)
