Description
'GRAVEL PIT' SHOWN ON 5IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 18.12, SURVEYED 1880) [B1]
A post medieval gravel pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 600 metres W of Hill Farm and centred at SP 73005 28719, a large irregularly shaped gravel pit is about 22,536 square metres in area and appears to cut through a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. The gravel extraction features on the 1880 dated 1st Edition OS map but not on subsequent editions. On recent remote sensing data, the extractive pit is still visible as a shallow earthwork of irregular hollows and mounds, whilst aerial photographs taken in 2015 shows contiguous linear extraction areas as cropmarks (2-5).
