A post-medieval pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within the grounds of The Rectory in Addington village and centred at SP 474188 228466, a D-shaped hollow is 31 metres W-E, 18 metres N-S and about 485 square metres in area and appears to have a flat surface at the bottom. Although the pit or hollow is recorded on the 1880 dated 1st Edition OS mapping, it may not have been created for extraction of clay, sand or gravel etc. Although speculative, its proximity of only 9 metres to the Rectory suggest it may possibly have been a post-medieval garden feature such as a terraced lawn or a sports playing area such as a croquet court. The feature is within the medieval village and therefore it is also possible that this was a former medieval pond. On recent remote sensing data and aerial photographs taken in 2019, the feature is still evident (2-4).
