Description
'GRAVEL PIT' SHOWN ON 6IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 18, SURVEYED 1880); TITHE MAP (ENVELOPE 82); 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 18.14, SURVEYED 1880); 6IN OS (SURVEYED 1930); 1:10,000 OS (SURVEYED 1971) (B1).
‘Mammoth tooth and bone from about 5 feet below the surface of the gravel pit at Steeple Claydon. August 1876’ donated to BCM by Sir Harry Verney. The only Steeple Claydon gravel pit shown on the OS six inch sheet, 18 SW, 1900 edition - a date not far off the accession, is an ‘Old Gravel Pit’ about 700m east of Three Bridges Mill. This lies in Steeple Claydon parish and was on Verney land so is likely to be the findspot B2).
A post-medieval gravel pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located adjacent Briarhill Farm and centred at SP 468141 226687, the irregularly shaped extractive pit truncates a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks from Briarhill Farm to Lake Farm and covers an area of about 13,351 square metres. Depicted on the 1880 1st Edition OS map as an ‘old gravel pit’, it is likely to date to the first half of the 19th century or earlier (3-5).
