A large post-medieval brickfield is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located about 540 metres NW of Boycott Manor Lodge in two fields adjacent to and within Hill Gate Spinney and centred at SP 65342 38063, the irregularly shaped pit is about 322 x 174 metres at its widest and covers about 25,262 square metres in area over the two fields and within the spinney. The former brickfield is visible as a very shallow earthwork, but it is not shown on the 1881 1st Edition OS map, although the ‘old brick kiln’ adjacent to the brickfield is identified. However, the site is depicted on the 1814 Ordnance Surveyor’s Drawing, perhaps suggesting a very early 19th century or 18th century origin (2-4).
