Description
'Pit' shown on 1st edition 6-inch OS map (Bucks sheet 13, surveyed 1880), 'Old Gravel Pit' shown on 1st edition 25-inch OS map (Bucks sheet 13.11, surveyed 1880), and on 1930s Revised edition 6-inch OS map (B1).
Two extractive pit of post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant levelled earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 460m north east of Benthill Farm, Buckingham, and centred at SP 470938 232499. These pits are probably former marl pits, based on their location in the fields. They are approximately 65x46m and 32x19m in size and are cut through ridge and furrow earthworks and ploughed earthworks on the 1940s aerial photographs; modern land use is arable and these pits are now visible as levelled earthworks or slight soil marks. Underlying solid geology is Peterborough Mudstone and this is overlain by superficial deposits of Till Diamicton. (2-4)
