Description
'Gravel Pit' shown on 1st edition 25-inch OS map (Bucks sheet 7.16, surveyed 1880)(B1).
Gravel pit identified during walkover survey carried out by Northants Archaeology in January 2009 (Feature 6). Described as sub-ovoid in shape, aligned NW-SE and measuring 25m X 20m and up to 2.5m deep. The sides of the pit are generally steep although the slope becomes more gradual to the south; the base of the pit is rounded, broken by material banked up in steps (B2).
A post-medieval subcircular gravel pit is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located adjacent the NW facing side of Whitfield Wood and centred at SP 64277 39589, the subcircular pit is about 26metres in diameter at its widest and has an area about 467 square metres. It is depicted on the 1884 dated 1st Edition OS map (3-4).
