Description

FIBULAE FOUND WITHIN BONES OF HUMAN SKELETON IN STONE QUARRY AT ASHENDON (B1). INHUMATION BURIAL (B6).
DATING OF 1 OF BROOCHES SUGGESTS BURIAL 1ST HALF C7 (B7).
OS SUGGEST THAT ONLY QUARRY ACTIVE IN C19 IS AT NGR (B8).
QUARRY NOW PARTLY FILLED, PARTLY A RESERVOIR (B9).



A pair of Anglo-Saxon saucer-brooches are said to have been found with a skeleton in a quarry at Ashendon (SP 7014). Akerman illustrates one showing garnet inlays indicating a Kentish influence (B14). The burial possibly dates to the first half of the seventh century (B7).
Found in a stone quarry at Ashendon in 1817 (B12).
Brooch now in the Hon R C Neville's collection at Cambridge (B11).
The only quarry known to be active in the 19thc (at Ashendon) is situated at SP70221406 but the exact provenance of the burial was not found (B13).
