Description
Bernard Hall - the village hall at Cuddington - was used during WW2 for various military uses. At the outbreak of war two coach loads of evacuees from London arrived at Bernard Hall on 3 September and they were met there by the families who had agreed to take them in. The hall was used for lessons for a period but by 1940 the number of children no longer justified this use.
In the latter part of 1942 the hall was requisitioned by the RAF to house personnel stationed at Haddenham but this occupation only lasted for about 3 months. Weekly dances were held for the RAF probably before and after its occupation.
In June 1943 the hall was requisitioned for use by the Women's Land Army as a recreational and feeding centre. In November 1943 there was a plan to adapt it to become a Girls' Hostel for the Land Army. There were local objections and this plan was withdrawn. On 26 May 1944 a notification was given to terminate the requisition of the premises (B1).
Bernard Hall [and Vicarage], SW of the church. A picturesque ensemble of 1933-4 by Philip Tilden for the Bernards of Nether Winchendon. Silvery timber-framing and brick above a stone base. At the front the one-storey hall, behind it the vicarage. Reputedly built from demolished alms-houses (B2).
