- FURNITURE FACTORY (19th Century - 1850 AD to 1880 AD)
Description
Three storey workshop currently (2004) used for furniture making by Browns. Walls to ground floor and two end-walls are of red brick with two upper storeys of weather boarding. Clay tile roof. Listed II* and owned by the National Trust. Typical external timber stairs lead to workshop on first floor. There is a passageway running through from front to back on the ground floor which leads into the back yard. The machine shop and store are on either side of this passageway. Small yard at front used for parking and loading but there was once a drying kiln here (oral evidence from occupant). Reputedly built on the site of a chapel which was destroyed by fire in the 19th century. Listing details give early date but present occupier believes it was built around 1860. Windows to the upper storeys have the typical overlapping small panes but look recent. Cellar under the southern end because of sloping ground. In West Wycombe conservation area. Report and photographs (B1).
