Description
18th century rubbish pit overlain by a 0.35m thick 18th or 19th century garden soil identified during evaluation trial trenching carried out by Oxford Archaeology in February 2005. Running parallel to Stratford Road, an 18th or 19th century stone-built culvert of dry-stone walls topped by limestone slabs had been truncated by a later, 19th century circular brick culvert. A modern steel fuel tank and filling station forecourt surface were identified at the northern end of the trench. The absence of medieval features and residual finds suggests that the area was open wasteland or agricultural land until the adjacent cottages were constructed in the 17th century (B1).
