Description

Collection of buildings comprising the factory and showroom of Frank Hudson, a company which makes a wide range of high-quality furniture. The firm was previously established in Easton Street in premises which were demolished. Age of buildings not known but the three storey brick building fronting Rosebery Avenue has a 1920s appearance. New metal roof and replacement windows. Showroom in a single storey building with modern or recently altered buildings to the rear. Frank Hudson is a master wood carver famous for having carved the replacement Red Lion for the portico of the Red Lion Hotel in High Street. Report and photograph (B1).
One of the last remaining utilitarian Victorian chair factories. Built of Common Felton bricks, then the cheapest brick available, under a slate roof. Three storeys to front, two to rear, and a modern single storey unit to north. Metal glazed windows (some replaced). The roadway façade is the more prominent view of the building complex, with the old workshops behind. Internally the old pine trusses are still visible as is the boarded roof structure. This was one of the new wave of industrial buildings built on the outskirts of the town around which a small satellite community developed, with its school, church and corner shops. In this small enclave this is the only remaining intact commercial furniture building. Its retention is important both historically and socially showing how this part of town developed in the late
Victorian Industrial expansion. Proposed for inclusion on local list (B2).
Decision not to locally list (B3).
