Description
Brick and slate-roofed two storey former furniture factory built end-on to road at 41 Baker Street. Not shown on 1899 Ordnance Survey map. The 1929 Rate Book shows factory occupied by Tompkins & Co who were chair manufacturers and upholsterers with 'commodious premises' according to 'The Cabinet Maker and Complete House Furnisher' of 27 October 1923. Furniture making ceased here before 1965 when the planning records show the premises had been extended to the side and were used for the manufacture of domestic electrical appliances. The factory was further extended in 1973. Around 2000 part of the complex was demolished and the remaining buildings refurbished and converted to offices. The windows in the early building have been replaced, the roof recovered and the walls rendered and painted dark red. A new atrium has been erected between the early building and the side extension. See report for detail and photographs (B1).
