Description

Red brick and slate house with date inscription over door of 1900. Crittall window in front bay. Later extension at first floor level over archway on eastern side. UPVC replacement windows to part of building. Archway leads to more recent two-storey brick furniture factory. Formerly known as Criterion Works when it was occupied by J Clark, a firm established in 1893 which specialised in reproduction furniture. There is a poor quality photograph in The Cabinet Maker and Complete House Furnisher of 27 October 1923, p.208, showing two factory buildings in an L-formation. Oral evidence from Greengate Furniture in 2004 that the building belongs to the company which has a factory around the corner in Oakridge Road and which links to this site. Greengate Furniture is due to close this factory shortly (2004/5) since it has acquired new premises in Cressex. This building appeared to be empty in 2004. See report for detail (B1).
