Description
Group of 20th century buildings of differing ages on the north side of Abercromby Avenue occupied by Joynson Holland, furniture makers. Three-storey red brick factory with corrugated asbestos roof and parallel to road probably built in 1920s. This factory is fronted by a two-storey red brick art-deco style office (probably 1950s) with Crittall windows to ground floor - tile decoration above the windows - and UPVC replacement windows to upper storey. This building occupied by Capri Moulds Co as at 2004. To the west and also fronting the factory is a three-storey office building (probably 1960s) with flat roof and red brick ground floor. The two upper storeys have white cladding and continuous runs of windows. An 1899 directory shows the furniture firm Jounson Holland in Abercromby Avenue but the firm had another factory on the south side of Abercromby Avenue, since demolished and redeveloped for housing. A 1928 article refers to "recent alterations" to the factory (The Cabinet Maker and Complete House Furnisher, 27 October 1928, p.174). During World War I the firm specialised in bentwood chairs and later in fireside chairs, rockers and cottage suites. School chairs were being made here in 1928. Joynson Holland took over the business of Gomm Brothers. As at 2004 Joynson Holland still used as a trade name but the company is owned by Highly Sprung which was formed in 1987 and makes sofas and high quality upholstered furniture. The 2004 BFM listing describes Joynson Holland as a manufacturer of show-wood upholstered furniture for domestic and contract markets. The earliest reference to Joynson Holland is in an 1895 directory in Newland Street. William Joynson had a chairmaking business at 10 Hughenden Road in 1875. See report for detail and photographs (B1).
