  • BOUNDARY DITCH? (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD)

Description

A small ditch aligned NW-SE, 1m wide, 0.54m deep and at least 3.5m long, with steep sides, a rounded base and a terminal at the SE end was identified during evaluation trial trenching carried out by TVAS in October 2004. The ditch fills contained medieval pottery of late 11th to 13th century date and fragments of animal bone. It is suggested that the ditch may have been a medieval boundary ditch at the rear of properties fronting onto Church Road or possibly a field boundary (B1).
