Monument record 0839600000 - Rear of 80 Aylesbury Road, Bierton

Trial trenching carried out by Network Archaeology in February 2004 identified 5 ditches or gullies, 1 pit and 8 postholes (5 of which were clustered together), possibly all dating from the 11th to 13th or mid 14th centuries, although few features were securely dated by finds. The relatively low level of acvtivity was interpreted as indicating that the site may have been at the periphery of medieval settlement (probaly backlands?). A few residual finds of late prehistoric flintwork and pottery and early to mid Saxon pottery were recovered along with late Saxon and medieval finds. There appears to have been a hiatus in activity between c1350 until the 17th century when the existing timber-framed house was built near the street frontage. Possible industrial activity is suggested by finds of animal bone and smithing slag, although these are undated. See report for detail (B1). NGR to centre.
