Description

Evaluation carried out by Oxford Archaeology in May and June 2004 identified a truncated medieval drainage or field boundary ditch, aligned east-west and 0.7m wide, 0.14m deep and at least 2.5m long, in test pit 1. The ditch fill contained unabraded sherds of Denham-type pottery, probably of late 11th century date, a few fragments of sheep skull and a late medieval or post-medieval roof tile fragment. A single sherd of 16th century red earthenware is considered to be intrusive. The ditch was probably cut into silty peat deposits and is interpreted as a drainage ditch dividing watermeadows adjacent to the river. NGR to approximate location of test pit 1 (B1).
