Description

2 undated pits, one 0.9m wide, the other 1.3m wide, both of unknown depth and containing many thin lenses of ashy material, recorded during watching brief carried out between April and June 2004 by Archaeological Services & Consultancy Ltd. Interpreted as cess pits and thought to pre-date the formation of the square in the Medieval period. The presence of small fragments of burnt clay in the fills and absence of finds other than small animal bones, suggest a possible prehistoric date. A brick built drain, 0.5m wide and 0.4m high, with internal dimensions of 0.3m X 0.3m, running NW-SE and probably of 19th century date, was also observed (B1).
