Description

10 ditches, 6 with stratified C3 or C4 pottery finds and 4 undated but probably also of Romano-British date, found during evaluation trial trenching and subsequent watching brief carried out between June and October 2001 by Network Archaeology. The linear ditches are suggested to be part of a Romano-British field system, whilst the curvilinear ditches are tentatively interpreted as settlement enclosure ditches. The presence of domestic activity in the vicinity is indicated by the type and quantity of associated finds, probably domestic rubbish. A possible ditch terminal in Trench 3 contained fragments of limestone building blocks each about 0.2m X 0.2m. 3 possible plough marks aligned NE-SW, 0.05-0.08m deep and 0.3-0.7m wide, were recorded beneath the subsoil in trench 5. An undated colluvium deposit 0.9m thick was identied overlying natural at the southern end of Trench 4. Also recorded were 19th or 20th century rubbish pits, drainage system and levelling layers and a a few late 19th or modern finds. No evidence for Romano-British pottery production (see CAS 0673 ) was found (B1).
