Description
Evaluation carried out by John Moore Heritage Services in July 2003 identified post-medieval features and deposits. A collection of late prehistoric struck flints was recovered from a possible buried soil horizon in Trench 1. The post-medieval features comprised a small circular flat-based posthole 0.34m diameter and 0.12m deep, with a post-pipe 0.13m diameter and over 0.35m deep. Post-medieval glass was recovered from the fill. An E-W aligned ditch 1.25m wide and approx 0.60m deep contained a silt fill with a large quantity of water molluscs present, suggesting that it may have been a drainage ditch. A residual flint flake was recovered from the fill. The ditch was later re-cut in the late 19th century, much narrower than it's original size. Several layers of re-deposited garden soils were present in Trench 2. These deposits may be related to the landscaping of the gardens after the removal of the tennis court in the 1940s. No medieval features or finds were identified, suggesting that any peripheral settlement or occupation associated with Little Marlow nunnery did not extend this far [B1].
