Description
Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Archaeological Solutions (HAT) in August 2003 identied post-medieval featues including a ditch, gully, cobbled surface and soakaway. The NW/SE linear ditch, possibly a boundary ditch, was 1.6m long, 0.9m wide and 0.3m deep with steep straight sides and a concave base. The finds from the fill comprise post-medieval pottery (60g) and animal bone (10g). The NE/SW linear gully, probably a drainage gully, was 1.6m long, 0.15m wide and 0.14m deep with steep straight sides and a concave base. The fill included post-medieval pottery (15g), building material (185g) and post-medieval glass (2g). The NW/SE linear soakaway was over 1.6m long and 1.4m long with near vertical sides. Post-medieval debris comprising brick, tile and drainpipe fragments infilled the feature. The truncated cobble surface extended over an area of 2.8m X 1.6m and was 0.10-0.15m thick. It comprised flints and river clasts and may have been associated with a cattle shed that stood on the site about 40 years ago [B1].
