  • SEAGULL TRENCH (Modern - 1939 AD to 1960 AD?)

Description

Small stretch (approx 80m) of zig-zag trenching alongside field boundary visible in field to rear of the Territorial Army Centre (site now occupied by Palmer Avenue), visible in 1948 RAF AP. Trench appears fairly 'fresh' or crisp, so presumably constructed late in World War II or immediately post-war (B1).

A possible Seagull Trench of World War II date is visible on historic aerial photographs as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately south of Ardenham Street, Aylesbury and centred at SP 81380 14065. A zigzag trench can be seen as an earthwork, against a hedge field boundary, on aerial photographs in the 1940s and is still present in 1950 but by 1961 a housing estate has been constructed on the area (Palmer Avenue). The ditches are very clear and not covered, as some seagull trenches are, they cover a length of approximately 74m in length and approximately 10m in width. They are not very close to any industrial buildings or factories where people could easily run from to shelter. (3-5)
