Description

There was a park here at the beginning of the 13th century (mentioned in the Calendar of Charter Rolls of 1257-1300) which was probably still in existence in 1414 when a conveyance of Sir John Chastillon mentions parks of the parishes of Stowe and Westbury [see CAS 4912] called 'Royes' or 'Royesia' and 'Makelines' or 'Malcolm's'. A lease of 1572 included a reference to a small area called 'Old Park'. The present park around Stowe house dates from 1651 (B1). It is not clear which of the manors in Stowe the park belonged to and VCH makes no reference to a medieval park. NGR to centre of Stowe parish.
