Description

Evaluation trenching carried out by TVAS in June 2003 identified 2 gullies and 2 pits, none of which were securely dated but probably all of medieval date. Finds of medieval pottery and smithing slag were recovered, mainly from subsoil layers, indicating possibly low intensity occupation along the southern street frontage in the 12th to 14th centuries (B1). Site in use as orchard and pasture from at least 1841 onwards (B2). Negative watching brief carried out by TVAS from November 2003 to January 2004 during groundworks. Features identified during evaluation did not extend into service and foundation trenches (B3).
