Description
Detailed earthwork survey carried out between April 2000 and June 2001 by English Heritage identified earthwork remains of a possible field system pre-dating the medieval and post-medieval field system and parkland features. See report for details (B1-3).
Geophysical survey followed by trenching and subsequent strip and record excavation carried out in March and May 2003 in advance of trenching for Thames Water pipeline, recorded severely truncated late Iron Age to early Romano-British ditches (8), gullies (5), pits (8) and postholes (2) in area of 'Celtic' field system identied by English Heritage. Only 2 ditches contained securely datable finds. The features was interpreted as part of a field system rather than settlement due to the sparcity of finds and fragmentary plan. The excavated features showed little correlation with either the earthworks recorded by English Heritage or the geophysical anomalies. See report for details (B4).
