Description
RAF vertical aerial photographs show an area of even ground, possibly the junction of open fields from the N and W, but also possibly a small concentration of house platforms (1). Later aerial photographs reavel that this field was ploughed in the 1970s.
A possible medieval deserted settlement is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 265 metres WSW of Salden House Farm and centred at SP 82206 29678, the earthworks extend over two fields, an area about 175 metres W-E and 100 metres N-S and comprise two irregularly shaped earthwork platforms that are partly enclosed by boundary ditches, with further boundary ditches. A subrectangular platform is about 42 x 33 metres, with a ditch on its E and N sides and extant field boundaries on its S and W sides, abutting a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. To its SW is a half oval shaped platform about 32 x 36 metres at its widest, with a boundary enclosing its curving side and an extant field boundary on its W facing side. A possible rectilinear ditched enclosure about 50 x 37 metres lies about 100 metres to the E, with a boundary ditch enclosing its N and W facing sides abutting a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation and extant field boundaries on the E and S. On aerial photographs taken in 2015 and 2019, the features in the south-most field have been plough-levelled and are now visible as cropmarks, whilst the subrectangular platform and ditch in the north field remains extant. The rectilinear enclosure ditch is no longer visible as a large agricultural building has been constructed on its site (2-6).
