Description
PORTIONS OF SAXON SHIELDS DUG UP & IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS MAY MARK SITE OF SAXON BURYING PLACE (B2).
INHUMATION BURIAL (B3).
HUMAN BONES SAID TO HAVE BEEN UNCOVERED BY PLOUGHING IN STONE PIT FIELD BY HERBERT ROSE C1900 (B5).
WOULD SEEM FINDSPOTS NEAR IF NOT IN SAME FIELD (B7).
Eythrope, Upper Wichendon. Inhumation burial. Bu 38 SW. SP 771141. 1905 'At Eythrop ... some iron relics that are easily recognized as part of a warrior's equipment have recently been unearthed, but no further details are forthcoming.' 'Probably to be identified with shield-bosses and spearheads "from Upper Wichendon" in Aylesbury Museum' (B1 and B3).
Portions of Saxon shields, now in Bucks. Co. Mus., were dug up in a field at the top of Cat Lane. [The top of Cat Lane is said to be on Coney Hill - Coney Hill Farm SP 7615] (B2).
In the County Museum there are three Anglo-Saxon shield bosses recorded as having been given to the Museum in 1899 by S.G Payne of Aylesbury. They are noted in the Accessions Book as 'probably from Winchendon'. There are also two spearheads recorded as 'probably from Upper Winchendon' (B8).
