Description

Plan Form - D SHAPED
SOIL MARK VISIBLE ON RAF AP'S (B1).

A b-shaped ditched enclosure of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs as an earthwork and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 520 metres NE of Haydon Hill Farm and centred at SP 79832 14312, a b-shaped ditch is between 2.5 and 10metres wide, with the long side of the ‘b’ being about 130 metres W-E and the bulb of the ‘b’ at its W end facing S and enclosing an internal area about 69 metres in diameter at its widest point. The function of this earthwork is unclear, as is its origin. However, as this feature is visible in the middle of a field as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1947, it might point to a probable medieval and/or post medieval date. It is possible that this is associated with the English Civil War actions around Aylesbury and a nearby civil war breastwork. On aerial photographs taken in 1986, the site is no longer visible, now being occupied by industrial buildings (2-3).

The indicated area is situated within the town of Aylesbury and is now occupied by an industrial site (B5).
NRHE insert 1998 (B6).
