Description
Large gravel pit shown on the OS 1st edition 6in map abutting the railway and filled with water. Possibly linked to embankment work for the railway to the east? (1, 2)
An extractive pit and spoil heap of post medieval/modern date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and levelled earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on the south side of the railway line approximately 400m east of Moco Farm, Swanbourne, and centred at SP 79635 29028. Some of the pit remains as a waterfilled area, measuring 236x54m, the excavations immediately to the south of this have been infilled and modern land use is ley/pasture/arable. The pit is cut in to Glaciofluvial Deposits of sand and gravel and there looks to have been a trackway south towards the road. (3-5)
