Description
The OS 1st edition 6in maps surveyed in 1880 shows two large, waterfilled pits next to the railway line and enclosed within an area of marshy land. Possibly linked to the raising of the LNWR railway above an often flooded area? (1, 2).
A post-medieval gravel pit is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within scrub woodland about 330 metres E of Lower Grove Farm and centred at SP 80759 29926, an irregularly shaped extractive pit was recorded on the 1881 1st edition OS map and is about 117 metres in diameter at its widest, covering an area about 7,736 square metres (3).
