Type and Period (1)
- WOOD CHEMICAL WORKS? (Post-Medieval - 1540 AD to 1798 AD?)
Description
Placename evidence would appear to suggest the production of the powerful alkali potassoum carbonate, originally got in a crude state by lixiviating (leaching) wood ash (from nearby woodlands suggested by placenames such as Beachampton Grove, Grove Farm, School Furze, The Oaks - parts of Whaddon Chase?) and evaporating the results in pots - hence pot-ashes (1, 2).
