Description

An article tracing the 10th century boundary of Winslow Manor notes that the long ditch is likely to have continued along the edge of the Great Horwood. The wood was known as Whitman's Grove in the 19th century and was deforested shortly after enclosure in 1841, but shape of the field line reflects the early Saxon boundary of the wood and Shucklow Common. The parish boundary now follows the straightened road (1)

A boundary of medieval or earlier date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 500m west of Little Horwood Manor and centred at SP 78711 31735. This boundary forms the southern boundary of an area of Woodland shown on the 1813 Ordnance Surveyors drawing as The Grove and recorded as Witman’s Grove on a conjectural plan of the parish of Great Horwood at the end of the 14th century, within Whaddon Chase. The boundary ditch is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs and is still visible on lidar visualisation ; modern land use is arable and the boundary is not easily visible. (2-7)
