Description

During the Eton Rowing Lake Project, Oxford Archaeology extended areas of topsoil stripping/excavation S from the former watercourse to this approximate location and called the sites 'Ex 1, Ex 2 and Ex 3'. Soil patches produced struck flints, including two Mesolithic picks or axes, an early Neolithic laurel-leaf point, and an assortment of other retouched tools. Amongst the irregular soil marks were small circular or oval pits filled with fire-cracked flint in matrix of charcoal-blackened soil. No postholes were found and no structures recognised. Excavation 2 identified an occupation level 0.5m below the topsoil, but no knapping clusters were located (10, 11, 12).
