Description
In advance of its demolition as part of the Maidenhead, Windsor and Eton Flood Alleviation scheme, Taplow Court Icehouse was recorded and found to consist of three barrel vaulted, brick walled chambers each one at a lower level than the previous. The building's full length was 6.45m x 1.81m wide. The bricks used were generally yellow, many were frogged and of a rough and imperfect nature with wide jointing. Each chamber was roughly square, with the highest having the porch/entrance for the loading of the ice. Steps linked each chamber. It is thought that ice was brought via the Bath Road 10m away, which may acccount for the icehouse facing S rather than the usual N. A drainage feature existed 0.6m to the east of the house - a square sectioned, brick lined chamber with sloped rim, rising 62cm to 90cm above ground. It may have had a slighty later date than the icehouse and was perhaps used as a soak-away drain leading to a level below the icehouse (1).
