Description

Yonder Lodge Cottage is probably contemporary with Yonder Lodge, a small country house of the late 18th century. Part of the north wing of the cottage was used as stables and the remainder may well have housed garden and stable staff. The cottage is clearly visble on the 1883 OS map. The rear of the building is open ground (lawn?) with plantings of trees and bushes. The cottage is shown as an inverted L-shape with the long axis on the north side and the short axis on the eastern side. A small extention or outbuilding is marked adjoining the rear wall. An evaluation in the form of a trial trench 3m x 2m was carried out within the footprint of a proposed extension to the property. At a depth of 0.3m a compacted 19th century levelling layer was found perhaps representing the foundation of an outhouse or previous extension to the cottage. No other features were observed (B1).
