Description

The English Heritage survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 notes the large sand/gravel quarry, still in use by the National Trust, east of Home Farm. The quarry was cut to provide material for Silverstone airfield at the beginning of World War II (1).

A large subrectangular 20th century gravel pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located about 150 metres SE of Home Farm and centred at SP 67143 37610, a rectangular gravel quarry measures about 91 x 80 metres covering about 6,885 square metres, with an additional extension that must have served and the entrance/exit in the SW corner with a slope that leads up to a trackway from Home Farm. Mapped from aerial photographs taken in 1946, aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data show the quarry has expanded in size since that time as quarrying has continued (3-5).
