Description
The English Heritage survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 notes the earthwork remains of target butts for the rifle range established here for the Buckinghamshire Yeomanry in the 1860s. The earthworks comprise of a large mound, 34m long, 16m wide and 1.2m high. There is a hollow on the SE side 12m long, 8m wide and 0.7m deep (20).
The rifle range was set up in the 1860s for the Bucks. Yeomanry, who used Stowe Park for training. It is depicted on the OS map of 1880. The rifle range replaced an earlier cannon firing range (99).
