Type and Period (1)

  • POND? (18th Century - 1700 AD to 1799 AD)

Description

Close by is shallow depression which has been interpreted as a deer pond and also a bomb crater form WW II, but is most likely to be the earth excavated to form the mound on which the Obelisk sits. (18)
The English Heritage survey of Stowe undertaken in 2001 notes a roughly circular hollow, 11m diameter x 0,5m deep, at this location. The survey also refers to the 1843 estate plan where the pond is shown within one of the 1759 plantings. Three trees and two tree holes remain of this clump (21).
